PNJ.COM/BEACHES:

A long-awaited snorkeling reef is being installed in the Gulf of Mexico off of Pensacola Beach.

Construction began today and will take a couple of days to complete, weather permitting.

Work was expectated to start last week, but the contractor needed calmer seas in which to work, county spokeswoman Sonya Daniel said.

The artificial reef will be constructed with several Ecosystem by Reefmaker units and installed about 450 feet into the Gulf off of Park East, just east of Portofino Resort.

The reef modules will be attached to pilings driven into the Gulf floor.

This project comes just three months after Coastal Marine Services constructed a 6,400-square-foot reef in 13 to 14 feet of water, 553 feet from shore, just off the Park West parking lot. About 400 surplus concrete blocks donated by BP were used on that project. That reef is geared more toward fishing.

The projects are part of the county's artificial reef program that was launched in 1999 to provide fish habitat and recreational opportunities. For GPS coordinates to all of Escambia County's artificial reefs, visit www.co.escambia.fl.us/Bureaus/Community ... Reefs.html, and click on "artificial reef list."

When I went to link for reef locations, the new snorkeling reef wasn't listed yet. When I get info. will post.

Barbour met with House members and a few other Republican leaders Thursday evening, and scheduled a chat with Gov. Rick Scott while he was in town today.
