Gulf Island National Seashore has plenty of fall events

Summer may be over, but the Gulf Islands National Seashore is not winding down its programs.

Recently, the Seashore released its fall and winter schedule.

Mark your calendars for:

Fort Pickens on Santa Rosa Island.

• Fort Pickens Area, open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Fort Pickens Visitor Center, open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. March through October and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. November through February. Ranger-guided tours 2 p.m. daily.

• Stargazing with the Escambia Amateur Astronomers' Association, sunset to 10 p.m. Fridays, Oct. 16, March 19 and April 16; weather permitting. Meet at Battery Worth Picnic Area.

Campfire Program at Historic Fort Pickens, 5 p.m. Jan. 2. Stories about the National Park Service and the National Seashore. Meet inside historic Fort Pickens. Take a lawn chair.

Fort Barrancas Area at Pensacola Naval Air Station

Fort Barrancas Visitor Center, open 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. March through October and 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. November through February.

Fort Barrancas ranger-guided tours, 2 p.m. daily. Advanced Redoubt ranger-guided tours, 11 a.m. Saturdays.

Candlelight Tours of Fort Barrancas.

Reservations are required for 1 hour tours every 15 minutes between 5 and 7:15 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 30 and Feb. 13. Call (850) 455-5167 for a reservation.

Naval Live Oaks Area in Gulf Breeze.

Naval Live Oaks Visitor Center, open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m daily. Orientation program and videos available on request. Call 934-2600 for more information.

Sound Side Serenade at Naval Live Oaks Picnic Area, 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, Enjoy an afternoon of music outdoors. Take a lawn chair or blanket to sit on.

Southeastern Native Americans and Indians of Pensacola Bay (auditorium program) at Naval Live Oaks Visitor Center, 5:30 p.m. Nov. 18.

39th Anniversary event of the National Seashore (auditorium program) at Naval Live Oaks Visitor Center Friday, 5:30 p.m. Jan. 8. Encore presentation of the PBS production of "Gulf Islands National Seashore: The Treasure of the Gulf Coast."

Presidential Perspective of the National Seashore (auditorium program) at Naval Live Oaks Visitor Center 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13 and Sunday, Feb. 14.

Community Events

Audubon birding field trips. For a current schedule of field trips, go to www.fmwaudubon.org. Select the current issue of The Skimmer Newsletter.

National Parks Week, April 17 — 25. Join park rangers for an open house at the Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida, 105 North "S" Street in Pensacola on noon to 3:30 p.m. April 17.

Celebrate Earth Day and National Junior Ranger Day at Bayview Park in Pensacola, 10 to 3 p.m. April 24.
