Burrrrr! Hello Florida . . So Long Iowa

On Monday through Wednesday of this week, us lucky Iowans were among several mid-western states who received mother nature's wrath. The "average" snowfall for the entire state's 99 counties was 10.2 inches and ranged from 4" up to 16". The State Climatologist reported it was the biggest snow statewi...

Old Pier Demolition

What is the status and current timetable on the demolition of the old pier. I seem to recall reading that the original firm was fired. Any updates?

Thanks

The Navarre Press requires a paid subscription and oddly enough twice I have attempted to contact them to sign up for an online subscription without response. In addition, the Navarre Press is a weekly, while in many cases the Google News is from the same day or previous day's papers. More is not al...

Go Hawks! I was at the Arizona game in Iowa City 2 weeks ago. Will watch the Arkansas State game from my preferred location, my recliner, in front of the big screen. Better than standing the whole game in order to see. Rainy and cold forecast for the game Saturday. The Hawks have some tough road gam...

For snowbirds or other non-resident visitors, you might find it useful to sign up for Google News Alerts. You can get news alerts on any subject you are interested in but for 2 or 3 years, I have received alerts related to Navarre Beach. A recent alert included the news of the upcoming opening of th...

Apparently they do have a new location on the Harbor, BeachGirl. I had heard this was coming over a year ago but still nothing on their web site about it that I can see. Once in a while, I listen to podcasts on http://destinfloridapodcast.com and I see on the April 5th archive, they address this. I ...

Is the large souvenir/t-shirt pace just across the bridge near where Cowboys used to be open these days? It appeared to be closed up all last winter. Was it just closed for the season? If permanently closed, has someone else made use of the building? I wasn't really a fan of the place but it would b...

I've eaten at TC's four times total and have had nothing but the Grouper Reuben. This last time though I added a shared pitcher of "Ying-Ling" beer which I had never had before. Can't beat the combination! Will have to try the sweet potato fries next time.

We chose this one: http://www.olinmarlercharterboats.com/ It was a great cruise. Our boat was the Hannah Marie. The guide was 85 years old and the grandson of one of the early pioneers of the area. I believe the large bridge you cross coming into Destin from the west carries his family name. He told...

So glad to read about this in the Navarre Press today. I proposed a volunteer clean-up effort on this forum to pick up asphalt chunks back in May of last year but my idea didn't seem to inspire anyone. Glad to see it is coming to pass. A BIG job but a starting place. Congrats go out to those who wer...

We have our daughter and family down here from Iowa during their spring break and we all went on a dolphin cruise at Destin yesterday. Kids were ages 7, 5 and 2. What a fantastic way to spend a couple hours. March rates are just $15 per person right now compared to the normal $29 but would be worth ...

I decided to take a walk down to the Navarre Towers area this morning and got there just after high tide between 11 and 11:30 AM. Below is a photo of the western of two walkovers at the Towers. I placed a 5 ft long lounge chair against the base of the walkover and a pair of sandles at the very edge ...

Armada on the Horizon

I glanced out the west window of the condo this morning to see more vessels at one time than any time I've been here. Had my telephoto fully extended so not terribly sharp. The closest was hauling another rig of some kind behind it. You who are more experienced from the area will be able to identify...

Well done, Navarrian! I also tried taking a video the other evening hoping to capture that orange ball sinking into the gulf. I was hoping there was some way for the video camera to capture it as the eye sees it with the sun so clearly defined in shape as it plopped into the water. But the camera le...
