Can someone please educate me please. I don't understand the stucture of the reef. Why is it so tall? I understand the shelves so fish can go in and out but I thought it would be built close to the ocean floor. Thanks!!

Left57, I certainly couldn't qualify as any kind of expert (plus, I do not even dive) and I'm sure there are a myriad of technical and ecological reasons but one thing that seems logical to me is that it being termed a "snorkeling reef" might have something to do with it!! If it were all on the ocean floor, would snorkelers be able to dive it??? I'm doubting it. Maybe someone with more technical expertise will see your post and we'll all get an answer to this question! :)

I have never understood the design and placement of the reef either? I have seen other artificial reefs in other parts of the world that were rectangles, squares, triangles with holes cut in them and of course made of reinforced concrete. You know, the types of structures sea life could swim in and out of. That is what I thought this reef was going to do.

I also for the life of me, can not understand why they did not either plant the old pilings in such a manner as to construct a reef or for that matter, cut them into smaller sections and just randomly lay them on the gulf floor. I know, they say they did not want them to become dislodged in a hurricane. Those pillars weight thousands of pounds. I am not an engineer but I do possess common sense and that dictates that a multiple ton piece of steel and concrete will probably be able to withstand the onslaught of a turbulent sea, especially if they were sunk into the seabed as the pier pilings are today.

Some of the answer to the questions could be the fact that some of the materials used by the engineering company in order to keep costs down were extra pilings donated by BP. Perhaps the design and placement was predicated upon some of those dimensions, etc. ???? :? But I know one thing for sure, these reefs provide a priceless resource for education and recreation!! PTL! Also, we wouldn't have this forum topic were it not for them!

I really don't know the ins & outs of why the reef structures are designed the way they are, but I can tell ya that they have attracted an astonishing amount of sea life! Turtles, dolphins, Octopi and all kinds of fish large & small. Every structure is also completely covered in plant life. It's pretty cool!

While it's certainly not what you would picture in your mind when you think "reef", it is flourishing nonetheless. Check it out next time you're here!

Being a Florida Master Naturalist I have relationships with all of the federal and state regulatory agencies. I will post new information tomorrow on a separate post that will knock your socks off regarding approved new artificial reefs for the Gulf just off shore at the last eastern pavilion and the approved new HUGE artificial reef 1 mile off shore. I should be able to post my info in the morning.

Why wait until tomorrow? Kick-off for another NFL football game just minutes away...Baltimore vs. Pittsburg.

Did I say my info will knock your socks off? See ya tomorrow.
