30 August 2013

For 5 September 2013 Navarre Press article:

- My retirement from active duty was officially on 31 July 2013, but my Retirement Ceremony at the Hurlburt Field Chapel Annex was on 21 June 2013
- We moved to Washington, DC by driving a U-Haul truck for 3 days, 24-26 June 2013
- For the Africa trip, my wife Jenny and I flew from Washington, DC to Johannesburg, South Africa via Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) 6-7 July 2013--our first time to both the Middle East and the continent of Africa
- We were in Africa for 24 days, 7-30 July but the trip was 26 days total with flying 6-31 July
- We visited the following countries: South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Tanzania (stopped in Nairobi, Kenya)
- We learned Tanzania is pronounced Tan-ZA-nia by the locals, not the Americanized version Tan-za-NI-a
- The entire month of July during this retirement trip to Africa I was still on active duty with the Air Force, which would have provided for medical coverage and medical evacuation by air to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, if I got injured while climbing or while we were traveling in Africa
- We spent most of our time in South Africa where we visited Nelson Mandela’s house and the tallest building in Africa, went to a master wine & cheese tasting near Cape Town, and toured the South Cape along the “Garden Route.” We also went on safari in Kruger National Park where we saw 4 of the “big five” animals including lions/leopard/elephants/cape buffalo (we also saw hippos, giraffes, zebras, hyenas, antelope, impala, gazelles, crocodiles, komodo dragons, bush pig, kudu, and several varieties of colorful birds and eagles) but we only saw a couple of white rhinos in a park since they are highly endangered due to increased poaching
- Our favorite place to visit was Victoria Falls and Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along both sides of the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe along the Zambezi River, which is the largest sheet of falling water in the world—twice the size of Niagara Falls in width and height.
- After our time along the Cape of Good Hope where we saw the penguin colony, right whales and seals, we flew to Nairobi, Kenya, where we split up. Jeff flew to Kilimanjaro/Arusha while Jenny flew to the island of Zanzibar, both in Tanzania. Jeff took the 7-day Machame Route with Big Expeditions to the 19,341FT/5,895M summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, this highest point in Africa, the largest free-standing mountain in the world, and the 4th highest peak in the world while Jenny spent her time on the beaches, sailing, shopping (including Tanzanite jewelry), and spice farms of Zanzibar.
- We were really impressed with our stay at the Zambezi Sun outside Livingstone, Zambia on the Zambezi River adjacent to Victoria Falls, which is in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park UNESCO World Heritage Site, where we had zebras, impala and giraffes right outside our hotel room sliding glass door
- We also enjoyed our sunset cruise on the African Queen (http://www.theafricanqueen.co.za/) where we saw several families of hippopotamus and crocodiles
- I took the most photos (1,500 in an hour) at Birds of Eden, the largest free flight bird aviary in the world which contains 3,500 birds in a two hectare net dome over a gorge of indigenous forest
- The people we met live very simply and enjoy human interaction. They do not meet many Americans and they have many questions about what America is really like (size of our cities, buildings, cars, etc.) since most of their impressions of America come from movies and TV. We found the people of Africa to be very friendly and welcoming of American tourists. Tourism helps alleviate the high unemployment (25%+) in some areas.
- Africans drive on the left side of the road, and driving in Tanzania was so chaotic, we had to hire professional drivers to get around or get from Arusha to Mount Kilimanjaro or the airport. We drove on the Western Cape of South Africa, which was not too bad since there were rules of the road, unlike Tanzania
- We took over 17,000 photos and 200 videos during our trip to Africa
