Ask enough about Alabama WR Amari Cooper and you'll start hearing the same things

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- How do you know Amari Cooper's off to a big start to his junior season?

During interviews throughout the week, an offensive tackle and a linebacker were asked to share their thoughts on the Crimson Tide's star wide receiver. And they were more than happy to gush about a player they're thrilled to watch tear up opposing defenses the same way he does behind closed doors at practice.

"Just an amazing athlete," right tackle Austin Shepherd said. "I wish I could be like that but I'm too big. He just makes people miss all the time. Super fast. He's an unbelievable player."

If Cooper comes anywhere close to matching the pace he's set through two games -- 25 catches, 319 yards -- there will be no shortage of stories, features, deep-dives, etc., about the reserved wide receiver. Perhaps we jumped the gun when we wrote about his value last week.

With that in mind -- and with Cooper not conducting interviews this week -- we'll simply let the words of his teammates and Nick Saban carry the torch heading into Saturday's game against Southern Miss.

You'll certainly notice a trend. They've mostly noticed the exact same things about how Cooper has risen to become one of the nation's top wide receivers.

Saban

"He's always had great ability. He's really played a lot of really, really good football with us. I think the biggest difference is he's matured in terms of his ability to overcome bad plays and never really show any frustration and just be able to go on to the next play and continue to play well."

TE Brian Vogler

"It's a testimony to how hard he worked in the offseason. Some guys want to be good, but he wants to be great. He wants to be the best ever to come through here. You have to admire that. It's kind of a privilege for me to play with a guy like that and see his work ethic. It definitely rubbed off on me. I saw how hard he worked. If he can do it, anybody can do it. It's awesome to see his hard work come out and he be able to put up the numbers he's been able to put up."

WR Chris Black

"It's just his attention to detail. He's a guy that uses technique every single play. He's a guy that can win one-on-one matchups each and every time he steps out there."

CB Cyrus Jones

"He's a guy who comes in and works hard. He's definitely a blessed athlete. He never stops getting better. He always wants to learn, improve, and try to find different ways to be effective on the field. It's a credit to him."

LB Reggie Ragland

"Amari is an athlete and when you're an athlete, you make plays like that. He's a good guy and a good player and everything he gets, he deserves it."

My Early Pick for the Heisman

QB Everett Golson, Notre Dame

Every person who saw Golson throw this summer came away with the same thought: He looks really, really good. Golson has since translated that offseason growth into some major production, first picking apart Rice with ease in the opener before throwing for 226 yards and three touchdowns without an interception in the Fighting Irish's 31-0 whitewashing of rival Michigan. He simply looks like a different quarterback — and is playing at a Heisman level.

What about a rematch of Alabama and Notre Dane for the National Championship? Not likely but an interesting event.

Really big SEC game today: Georgia at South Carolina. I'm picking an upset...South Carolina by 5 points.

Florida by 24 points tonight over Kentucky.
