Development Possible in the Northern Gulf of Mexico
The low pressure center which was once Tropical Depression Five has drifted southward across the Florida Panhandle and has now once again entered the Gulf of Mexico, just offshore of Panama City. The center of circulation will continue to drift southward over the next 12 hours before taking a more westward turn across the northern Gulf on Monday night and Tuesday. The center may then approach or even move onshore onto the Louisiana coastline again by Tuesday evening. Satellite and radar imagery shows an expansive area of showers and thunderstorms associated with the low center, especially just to the southwest of the center of circulation. Upper-level winds and water temperatures will be conducive for redevelopment of this system over the northern Gulf and it may become a depression again sometime during the day on Monday. Strengthening into a tropical storm cannot be ruled out later on Monday or Monday night, but should we see development into a tropical storm, it will likely be a minimal storm.
Elsewhere, there are tropical waves in the western Caribbean along 82 west and in the eastern Caribbean along 61 west. No development is forecast from these waves as wind shear looks to inhibit further development. There is also a tropical wave along 22 west near 22 north that is tracking westward, but satellite imagery shows little in the way of deep convection associated with this tropical wave. There continues to be a large area of dry air associated with a plume of African dust covering much of the basin east if 55 west. This dry air is part of the reason the wave along 22 west has little thunderstorm development associated with it. No storms are forecast to develop across the eastern Atlantic through at least the middle of this week.
