Update About the 2016 Navarre Beach Renourishment Project

Being certified as a Florida Master Naturalist for Coastal Systems, I have held back on commenting about the upcoming 2016 Navarre Beach Renourishment Project until now. There is a lot of misinformation out there about the 2016 Renourishment including info on this Forum.

Many years ago when I completed the course as a Florida Master Naturalist the students prior to graduation had to present before the class a selected 20 minute presentation. My presentation was a photo slide show documentary about the 2006 Navarre Beach Restoration Project.

I have had a very strong relationship for 10 years with the engineers at Coastal Tech, the primary contact and environmental consultant on behalf of Santa Rosa County’s contract with Weeks Marine, the contractor for the 2016 Renourishment Project. Jimmy Sellers at Coastal Tech shared with me this morning an Update on the Renourishment Project. I will post some info shortly about what’s going on at this time according to Coastal Tech.

Jimmy Sellers will send me tomorrow more up to date info and I will share it with you folks.

Update About the 2016 Navarre Beach Renourishment Project

• The dredge ship and equipment will depart from Delaware. The dredge ship and equipment completing the Pensacola Beach Renourishment Project will not be used at Navarre Beach.

• Santa Rosa County is sticking with the Contract whereby the Renourisment will not start in the fall or winter months.

• The arrival of Week’s Marine with their dredge ship, equipment and crew are scheduled to arrive and start the Beach Renourishment Project by the end of March. Hopefully, the Project should be completed by June and maybe sooner. Coastal Tech at this time is not aware of any delay as has been mentioned on several online social media sites.

• The Project will begin on the Eastern End of the Beach. It’s my understanding that the Project will start first at the Eastern boundary of the Navarre Beach Marine Park, then proceed west including the Fishing Pier and the high-rise condos.

• The sand distribution will only require about 50% of the volume that was distributed during the 2006 Navarre Beach Restoration Project for most of the beach. However, the very western end of the Beach will require much more sand distribution.

• Since the sand distribution will be much with this Project the actual time of the Dredge and equipment used will be significantly less. This means that the Project will only be in front of particular condos and beach homes for maybe 2 or 3 days. Then the Project continues to move on to the next site. Otherwise, most of the Beach will be accessible during the Project. The idea that the whole Beach is going to be shut down until the whole Project is completed is not true.

• During the 2006 Project the dredge ship was very careful, but did have 3 sea turtle kills. I’m hoping that the Project has less sea turtle kills since the sand distribution will be about 50% less. The sea turtle nesting season starts May 1 and usually nests do not show up until about mid-May.

• Being that I coordinated with the Florida Audubon in 2015 the protecting of the black skimmer’s nesting areas, I don’t see a real problem with their nesting. 1) Most of the black skimmers do not nest on the Gulf side of the Beach. 2) The black skimmer nesting season starts May 1.

As mentioned earlier today I should be able to provide more info tomorrow from Jimmy Sellers with Coastal Tech.

Gotta love bullet points !!! :)
Perfect/factual/timely info.... This answers my main questions. My brother and I were talking today and this came up. Your research and his "card carrier" knowledge and experience with the 2006 operation cleared my blond head of a lot of details......

Kenny-

I have pulled together the information you and I discussed, which is based on the Contractor’s (Weeks Marine, Inc.) submittals to the County and discussions we’ve had with the Contractor since the construction contract was awarded. Here’s what we know now:

• Project Schedule – the Contractor’s construction schedule, as submitted with their bid, shows:
o Mobilization beginning April 1st
o Sand placement from April 18th to June 6th
o Demobilization completed by June 11th.
• Project Equipment – the Contractor plans to use two hopper dredges for construction of this project; the “R.N. Weeks” and “B.E. Lindholm”. These dredges are not being used on the Pensacola Beach project.
• Work Sequence – discussion with the Contractor indicates construction of the project will be in an east to west direction, beginning at the Marine Park and working towards the Gulf Islands National Seashore. The Contractor will be working 24 hours a day/7 days a week.

We expect to confirm all of the above with the Contractor in the next month. I will let you know as this and other pertinent project information are confirmed.

Thank you for your help,
-Jimmy

If true to last time this was done, besides the increased storm-buffer for the mainland, one of the notable "side effects" will be that there should be some great shelling opportunities this coming summer! :) That's good for tourism!

thanks for the input Kenny.

Why is this stuff just not made more accessible? You have uncovered more than the entire media of the region seem to be aware of....
