Does anyone know what the purpose of the "SUNFISH" is in front of the barges that go by on the Sound?

Sunfish at the front of the double barge "Marathon" on Santa Rosa Sound, 23 July 12

Looking for the function of the "SUNFISH" at the front of the barges going by on the Sound.

From what I was" told", at the front of gas barges they have a bow steering system, which I think is the sunfish you are referring to.

Very interesting! Love to see the traffic on the bay while in Navarre! Great picture! That is a big barge!

I'm with you Dave...I think it is a remote steering system to "lead" the turn of the barge as they are pushed from behind buy the tug. The sunfish appears to have an engine and exhaust stack.

I have asked several boat captains and mates from ocean-going ships and they don't know much about inland coastal waterway sailing either.
